Scars

This collection began with a persistent thought that life is an accumulation of physical and mental scars in various states of healing. A series of recent life events led me down this path - the passing of my grandmother, a close friend who received a cancer diagnosis, and a family member I removed from my life for a private reason. All of the above led to the creation of a series of four pieces, that deal with scars, loss, death, disappearance, change, and a final piece that deals with hope, persistence, and new life. I lived in a dark, difficult headspace for around a month while creating the work for this collection. It was a challenge but a therapeutic and necessary exercise because I confronted recent scars and revisited some that will never heal. Then life changed in the blink of an eye. My wife told me she was pregnant, and something inside of me changed instantly. Instant happiness and tears of joy. The lingering effect has been profound- the darker themes that were occupying my thoughts have been washed away by a burst of colors. After receiving the pregnancy news, we traveled to New York for a week to visit friends, artists, and collectors. When I returned and tried to get back to work on the collection it was impossible. I tried to return to that previous mental state, but I wasn't able to access it. During hurricane season it's common for old trails to be washed away leading to the creation of new paths. Same goes for this collection. Same goes for life.

01

The Drop

Centered on themes of loss and renewal, Scars is one of the artist's more personal and introspective body of works. Fueled by life's cyclicity, Scars is a brutally honest undertaking, whereby loss makes way for hope, with the tacit understanding that while human nature's bias is for renewal and optimism, the artist does not discount nor dismiss grief. There is no sacrificing pain at the altar of a rosy-eyed future in Scars. Our humanity is dealt with fair and square with profound intellectual and emotional honesty. Through Scars, we get the artist at his most truthful. No shortcuts.

Living in the present moment and then leaving it. Something that was there before is gone. This work is a depiction of a memory. A depiction of an eye blinking. The memory lives on in hazy black and white; the colorful bottom section is the fleeting present moment.

My grandfather, in 1985, after a long day working construction. Dirty coveralls, crooked hat, cigarette in hand, on the phone. He was a complicated man to many around him, but he was a father figure and the most positive male role model I had as a child. I was in the room when he passed away in 2003. I saw him frequently after his passing in my dreams, where he was always silent and never spoke. I revisited him while on ayahuasca. I relived the last time I saw him at home and sitting on his porch. He had been battling cancer for years, and I thought he would make it through again. His sight had failed him, but he called out my name when he heard my voice. His beautiful white hair was falling out, and I don't remember what he was talking about because I was too concerned with things I thought were more important

Crow

Crow is an artist living and working in Orlando, Florida, who explores the boundaries of photography and abstraction through his work created on basic office equipment.

Instead of a canvas or traditional tools, Crow employs an unconventional tool set to create his work, including scanners, LED lights, secondhand printers, sandpaper, rain, and dirt. Rarely does he pick up a paintbrush, but his hand is evident in the analog layering process employed in his work.

As a colorblind artist, Crow explores a fascination with visual effects and emotions conveyed through specific colors or color combinations. The work commonly focuses on time, mortality, endurance, and longevity.
